What is Paranormal?
Paranormal is defined as beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation pertaining to the claimed occurrence of an event or perception that is without scientific explanation, such as psychokinesis, extrasensory perception, or other purportedly supernatural phenomena such as hauntings.
What do Paranormal Investigators do?
Paranormal Investigators come to a location and interview the witnesses about the unexplained activity that they have experienced. They then begin an investigation by ruling out any logical explanation for the perceived paranormal experience including taking measurements of electromagnetic fields (EMF) which are areas of energy that surround electrical devices. Power lines, electrical wiring, and appliances produce EMFs. Because our body is controlled by electrical impulses, we are susceptible to these fields.
Low-frequency electric fields influence the human body just as they influence any other material made up of charged particles. When electric fields act on conductive materials, they influence the distribution of electric charges at their surface. They cause current to flow through the body to the ground. Low-frequency magnetic fields induce circulating currents within the human body. The strength of these currents depends on the intensity of the outside magnetic field. If sufficiently large, these currents could cause stimulation of nerves and muscles or affect other biological processes. (World Health Organization)
EMF can affect each of us in different ways. These fields can produce symptoms such as paranoia (the feeling of being watched), a general uneasy feeling that you can not explain, headaches, anxiety, nausea and fatigue. These electrical forces may also reduce heart rate and interfere with brain electrical activity during sleep. Ruling out experiences caused by exposure to these fields can lead the investigator into the next step of the investigation.
What is the next step for the Paranormal Investigator?
Using all the tools we currently have available to us does not explain why paranormal activity is occurring it only helps document that it is occurring. Research on the history of the people or location is a key tool in understanding why there may be this type of activity.
Most hauntings have a personal tragedy or trauma attached to the location. Sometimes this energy may remain as a residual haunting. A residual haunting is paranormal activity that you can not interact with. The human's spirit is not attached to the activity. It is like a recording in time that plays over and over whether anyone is there to witness it or not. Sometimes replaying a mundane activity like walking up the stairs or an event that was so tragic it left on imprint in space and time.
An active haunting is one where the human's spirit is still attached to the person or the place. You can induce responses using a voice recorder or EMF meter fluctuations associated with questions asked. To find who this person is and why they are trying to reach out requires historical investigation. Use of mediums can be helpful when dealing with an active haunting. Mediums have special abilities to see events that have occurred in the past and a direct line of communication with the spirit world.
What if there is proof I have an active haunting?
If Paranormal Investigators are able to document proof of a haunting, we encourage the client to acknowledge the spirit. Talking to the spirit just as you would any other person or a stranger in your house. Almost like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum because they are not getting what they want, spirits can become frustrated and act out. If they are scaring you, tell them that this is your home and you will no longer tolerate them being in your space and that they need to leave. If they need assistance in crossing over, maybe reading a prayer for them may help. Sometimes just acknowledging their presence and a little understanding can go a long way to easing the spirit's interruptions into your space. There are benevolent spirits and malevolent spirits just as there are good and bad people. If a blessing is necessary to remove a malevolent spirit from a location, it is best to perform that blessing according to your religious beliefs.
Paranormal Investigators use a myriad of tools in an effort to document activity. We are searching for proof in a field where it has not been easily obtained. Investigators and those that are creating electronic equipment specifically for use in this field have to be inventive. Spirits do not perform on command. We encourage communication when we are at a location and try to capture it using the following devices.
EMF meters, as explained previously, is a valuable tool. Paranormal investigators have found that electromagnetic fields can also be linked to spirit activity. The theory is that those on the other side need energy to affect our world so they draw the energy from these electromagnetic fields to produce sound, move objects, create light, etc. These fields may increase inter-dimensional communication. Also because everything in our universe is made up of energy, including spirits, their energy or fluctuations in this field can be detected through the use of EMF Meters.
Voice recorders (including digital or a cassette tape recorder) can capture voices outside of the frequencies that we can hear with our naked ear. This is called electronic voice phenomena (EVP). Sometimes upon playback, you can hear responses to questions asked coming from a person who was not physically in the room.
Spirit voice communication can also be captured with a device called a spirit box. This device scans multiple radio frequencies within seconds to produce white noise or radio frequencies that a spirit can use to produce words that are audible through the unit.
The Ovilus is another device similar to the spirit box that uses electromagnetic frequencies to choose a response from a preset database of over 2,000 words. The idea behind this, is that an intelligent entity will be able to alter the environment in such a way that forces the Ovilus to "speak" an appropriate response.
Cameras (digital or film) have the ability to capture an experience we are having or sometimes a presence or light anomaly that we are unable to see with our naked eye. Cameras that can capture in the spectrum outside our visibility such as infrared or thermal video cameras, or cameras fitted to capture the ultraviolet spectrum are some of the best tools we currently have to accurately visualize and document activity.
Motion Sensors, Shadow Detectors and Laser Grids
These are all valuable tools to help detect a presence that we can not see. Motion sensors and shadow detectors have alarms which can indicate movement when there is no one in the room. Laser grids shoot multiple points of light into an area and when these beams are disturbed it is visible.
Thermometers are used to detect unexplained or swift temperature changes associated with "cold spots". It is another device that can be used to confirm a change in the environment.
